Page: From ROWUSD Superintendent, Dr. Paul Sevillano: A Message from the Superintendent: Dear ROWUSD Parents, Guardians, and Families,
At ROWUSD, we are committed to providing every student with the opportunities, resources, and support needed to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. An essential part of achieving this commitment is ensuring that our students attend school consistently and remain actively engaged in their education.
Regular school attendance is one of the most important factors contributing to student achievement and long-term success. In 2026, ROWUSD reduced chronic absenteeism by 4%, reflecting positive progress in our ongoing efforts to improve student attendance. Students who miss 10% or more of the school year, whether absences are excused or unexcused, are considered chronically absent.
Research consistently demonstrates that students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academic success, develop meaningful relationships, strengthen their social-emotional skills, discover new interests and talents, and graduate on time.
Even small attendance gaps can have a significant impact. Missing just two days of school a month, whether excused or unexcused, adds up to approximately 10% of the school year.  Over time, these missed instructional opportunities can affect a student’s ability to read at grade level, develop essential mathematics skills, maintain academic progress, and remain on track for graduation.
We recognize that families face circumstances that can make regular attendance challenging. Illness, family emergencies, transportation difficulties, health concerns, and other unexpected situations are realities that many families experience.  We want you to know that you are not alone in navigating these challenges, and our schools are here to help.
If your family is experiencing barriers to consistent attendance, I encourage you to connect with your child’s school principal, counselor, or school office.  Our district is committed to working collaboratively with families to identify challenges, explore available resources, and develop meaningful solutions that support students in attending school regularly.
We also offer Saturday Academy, which provides students with an opportunity to recover missed instructional time and, when applicable, make up an absence. For students who anticipate extended absences or have unique circumstances affecting their attendance, we encourage families to contact their child’s school office to discuss available options and appropriate arrangements.
As we move forward together, I ask every family to join us in making consistent attendance a shared priority. Through strong partnerships between our schools, families, and community, we can help every student reach their fullest potential.
Thank you for your continued trust, partnership, and commitment to the success of our students. Together, we can make every school day count and ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
